I think Difficult Loves would be a good book to read becuase it's about love, which most people enjoy... Also seems like a good story for discussion & close reading. Another suggestion, Great Gatsby.

Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka looks interesting. A man wakes up one morning to find he has been transformed into a vermin? Sounds like it would be a good read and a little wacky. I've heard nothing but good things about it also.
